While healthy skin habits are important throughout the year, during Healthy Skin Awareness Month, it is time to think about the steps that go beyond the basics. That is, the things you need to do to ensure your skin remains healthy long term. A component of that is knowing when there’s a problem.
As people get older, their skin changes. It’s easy not to realize a new blemish has shown up on your skin that could be more than a freckle. Consider a few things you can do during this time of the year to ensure you’re giving your skin the best resources and care possible.
Be Sun-Smart
The sun is the skin’s enemy. You may know the importance of using UV protection, but there’s more that you can do, like wearing oversized hats and keeping your eyes protected with sunglasses. But, how do you know your skin isn’t at risk? Some signs of skin damage may include
- Uneven pigmentation – areas of differing colors
- Darker skin damage – the top layer of the skin may have pigmentation and wrinkles
- Solar lentigines – sometimes called liver spots, are dark spots that show up on the skin
Also, if you have sunburn, you are at a higher risk for further sunburn. That’s why it’s so important to be aggressive at protecting your skin from sun exposure.
Know the Signs of Skin Disease
Skin diseases are numerous, each of which can lead to numerous health risks. The presence of high temperatures brings some on, but others come from viruses and bacteria that build up into an infection. Some signs of conditions that warrant a trip to the dermatologist include the following:
- Acne: While pimples occur to many people, adults with acne, especially a significant amount, may need treatment. It typically occurs due to a buildup of oil and bacteria in the pores.
- Alopecia areata: This is a condition in which small patches of hair fall out, often in a circular shape. If you notice this on any area of your skin, even your arms and legs, be sure to seek out treatment.
- Atopic dermatitis: More commonly recognized as eczema, you may notice areas where there is itchy skin and dry, damaged areas. Some people experience more scaling or cracking of the skin.
- Psoriasis: Noted for its scaly, white patches of built-up material, this is an autoimmune disease. Left untreated, it can lead to an increase in infection risk. It can also be very painful without treatment.
- Rosacea: Those who have skin that flushes to pink and red significantly, often with pimples, may have this condition. It, too, can cause infections and discomfort if left untreated.
- Skin Cancer: Perhaps the biggest concern for many people, especially with significant sun exposure, is sun cancer. If you notice skin discoloration and moles, especially new or changing in size and shape, that’s a big reason to seek out a dermatologist.
Keep in mind that there are many other types of skin conditions. Often, it’s hard to know when there is a problem. That’s why it is so important to do a skin check on yourself on a routine basis. If you notice changes to your skin, in any way, seek out an underlying cause. It is also important to consider any discomfort, such as pain or tingling sensations. The sooner you take the time to get help, the better for your skin’s long-term health.
