Lip Flip Vs. Lip Filler – Know the Difference

As we age, the structure of our face begins to change. The loss of skin volume and bone density contributes to the visible signs of aging, including that around the lips and perioral area.  With time, our lips lose their fullness, and vertical lines around the mouth begin to form. Two popular treatments to help reverse these changes are lip filler and the “lip flip.” So, how do you know which treatment is right for you? Check out the breakdown below.

Lip Fillers

Fillers, such as Juvéderm® and Restylane®, work to treat fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of volume in the face by using hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a naturally occurring protein sugar that is found in our bodies. When injected, it can restore volume and define the delicate lip structure, creating a fuller lip with a youthful, soft, and natural appearance.

Lip Flip

Conversely, the lip flip procedure uses neuromodulators such as Botox® or Dysport® to relax the muscle surrounding the upper and lower lip, causing the lip to “flip” upwards and result in a lippier and fuller smile. The lip flip procedure is popular for those who don’t want to add actual filler, but still want a similar but subtler look.

While lip flips are a perfectly safe (and popular) procedure, this treatment is considered off-label by the FDA. This makes it especially important to have them performed by skilled cosmetic dermatologists and providers.
