What Are Poison Ivy, Oak, and Sumac?

Poison Ivy, Oak, and Sumac are poisonous plants that can cause a burning, itching rash to appear on the skin. This rash is caused by an oil found in the plants. The itchy, blistering rash often does not start until 12 to 72 hours after you come into contact with the oil.

CAUSES

This rash is caused by the urushiol oil contained in the plant and can be caused by physical contact with any part of the plant. The rash can also be caused by touching an object, animal, or item of clothing that came in contact with the oil. The burning of the plant will allow bits of the oil to be expelled into the air, which can then come in contact with the skin and cause the rash to form.

RISK FACTORS

More than 80% of people are susceptible to this rash. The body may become more sensitive or less sensitive to the rash as a person ages.

SYMPTOMS

It could be hours or days until the rash begins to appear and itching, hives, red or swollen skin, and blisters may also be present.

DIAGNOSIS

A doctor will diagnose the rash by sight.

Treatment and Prevention

The only way to prevent rashes is to avoid physical contact with these plants and protect your skin. Most people see the rash go away in a few weeks. Prescriptions medication and steroid ointments are available to treat the rashes that result from contact with Poison Ivy, Oak, and Sumac urushiol oils.

If you have a serious reaction, you need to see a doctor right away. Swelling is a sign of a serious reaction — especially swelling that makes an eye swell shut or cause your face to swell. You should schedule an appointment to see a doctor if the rash covers a large part of your body, you have large blisters or cannot sleep. If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, immediately go to an emergency room.
