Angel Park – From Dream to Reality

On July 8th, dozens of volunteers gathered at the site that would soon become Angel Park to kick off its construction. Angel Park is not just a park…it holds a special meaning to the community. After losing their son Ryan to leukemia at only 15 months, Kelli and Andy Szczybor decided turn their devastating loss into a chance for happiness for others. Their goal was simple, help bring joy and a peaceful retreat to other children like Ryan and those who had lost a loved one or have children with special needs. It was from this desire to show kindness and compassion to others that the idea for Angel Park was born.

The path to the commencement event this past Friday was not without challenges. A project of this size would require more than just emotional and monetary support, it needed hands-on volunteers who were willing to put in the time and energy to build the park. As time went on and word of the plans for Angel Park spread through the community, passionate and eager people joined the mission. Before Kelli and Andy knew it, they were ready to make this dream a reality.

The joy of childhood is a central theme for the park so the Szczybor’s gave creative control to those who would most accurately capture childhood in images. Over 4,500 children were consulted for their artwork and suggestions for the park. By the end of their artwork search, the contractors and designers knew exactly what should be represented in the park.

On the day of the commencement, the future home of Angel Park was swarming with eager volunteers – some with hammers in hand and others with refreshments. It really felt like an Angel Park miracle to have so many members of the community coming together and working towards an amazing and rewarding goal. Local vendors and businesses attended to show their support for the Szczybor’s dream of an all-inclusive park and amphitheater.

Anne Arundel Dermatology’s Towson office was one of those lucky local businesses that was able to witness this community miracle. To make sure that the wonderful volunteers stayed in great building condition, members of the Anne Arundel Dermatology team were there handing out sunscreen to keep everyone’s skin sunburn-free.
