The Faces of Skin Cancer

Did you know that the Skin Cancer Foundation says more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined? In fact, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70. The epidemic is growing, but using precautions, early detection and treatment, there is hope that these frightening statistics will be a thing of the past. We are grateful that those affected by skin cancer are speaking out and encouraging everyone to get their skin checked. Here are a few names and faces of skin cancer you might recognize who have been treated for skin cancer or cancerous lesions:

Hugh Jackman: The “X Men” actor claims to have had multiple skin cancers removed, and is now an advocate for skin cancer screenings.

Bob Marley: Unfortunately, this legendary singer/songwriter was diagnosed with a rare form of melanoma in 1977. Marley’s death in 1981 was a huge reminder to get skin cancer checks and that any skin complication can be subject to skin cancer.

John McCain: Though this political powerhouse is known for being tough as nails, he was first diagnosed with melanoma in 1993. After multiple surgeries to remove melanomas from his neck and head, McCain was declared skin cancer free in 2002.

Khloe Kardashian: Even the Kardashian’s are not safe from skin cancer. Khloe revealed that after a skin check, she had 8 inches of skin removed due to a concerning mole. The star used her huge social media platform to share her experience on her app.

Brooke Shields: This actress revealed that tanning habits of her youth had serious consequences. Her doctors found a precancerous spot on her face which caused Shields to take a more serious look at her relationship with the sun and become a skin cancer activist.

Elizabeth Taylor: In 2002, the now late actress disclosed she had undergone radiation therapy after she was diagnosed with skin cancer. Taylor was eventually cleared of the disease, and lived cancer free!

Skin checks are simple procedures that can be done in minutes. We would be happy to help you schedule an appointment to get your skin examined or learn more about what happens at a skin cancer screening.
