Light-Based Hair Reduction 101

Excess hair can be embarrassing. However, it doesn’t have to be a concern forever. Light-based hair reduction is a fast and simple solution to unwanted hair. This treatment targets unwanted hair with highly concentrated light that attacks the hair’s pigment, removing it while leaving the skin undamaged. After 4-6 treatments, most patients have permanent hair loss in the targeted areas. Light-based hair reduction can be used on the face, legs, arms, underarms and bikini line.

The light pulses used in this treatment are so quick that smaller areas can be treated in minutes, while larger areas such as the legs, may take up to an hour. Each pulse of the laser light takes only a fraction of a second and removes many hairs at once. Patients see results immediately, with no recovery time. The skin may be red and swollen, but should not inhibit any daily activities.

While patients will see a noticeable difference after the first treatment, it often takes 4-6 treatments for an area to remain completely hairless. Results can last anywhere from months to years! When hair does grow back, it will likely be less noticeable. After light-based hair reduction treatments, we recommend protecting the treated area from direct sunlight and tanning beds. Although there are no hazardous side effects for this treatment, we always recommend closely following your dermatologist’s recommendations for aftercare.
