Does Diet Affect Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an autoimmune skin disease that leave those infected with red, scaly rashes on various parts of their bodies. Currently, there are treatments that can offer relief, but there is no known cure for psoriasis. While a change in diet has not been medically or scientifically proven to improve psoriasis symptoms, there are some who claim it has worked wonders. Take control of your psoriasis by trying a diet-based treatment plan in hopes to reduce the rashes and see if diet can affect psoriasis.

One option that many have found helpful is a gluten-free diet. Gluten is a protein found in grains such as wheat or rye bread and pasta. According to a 2017 Dermatology Therapies Journal article, other foods that were found to have triggered psoriasis flare ups include sugar, dairy, alcohol and fast foods. After adjusting your diet to avoid these foods, take note whether your condition has changed at all. If so, you may want to continue and focus in on exactly which food or foods are helping your skin.

Another way to help reduce psoriasis symptoms is to consume foods that have been linked to an improved condition. Vitamins such as omega-3, probiotics and vitamin A, B, C, D and E are a few to consider. Drinking water and eating the recommended portion of fruits and vegetables are also variables in reducing the effects of psoriasis.

While making changes to you diet, be sure to consult a doctor. If you are suffering from psoriasis, please consider scheduling an appointment with one of our esteemed dermatologists here!
