What Is Dandruff?

Dandruff is a common chronic scalp condition marked by itching and flaking of the skin on your scalp. Although dandruff isn’t contagious and is rarely serious, it can be embarrassing and sometimes difficult to treat. The good news is that dandruff usually can be controlled. Mild cases of dandruff may need nothing more than daily shampooing with a gentle cleanser. More stubborn cases of dandruff often respond to medicated shampoos.

CAUSES

  • Dry skin, which is a common cause of flaking.
  • Oily skin or irritation due to excess oil production on the scalp.
  • Sensitivity to certain hair products, which can trigger irritation and flaking.

SYMPTOMS

  • Itching of the scalp.
  • Visible flaking of the skin on the scalp, which may fall onto clothing.

Treatment

Most cases of dandruff don’t require a doctor’s care. Mild cases can often be managed with daily shampooing using a gentle cleanser. If over-the-counter dandruff shampoos do not work after several weeks of use, or if the scalp becomes red or swollen, it’s important to see your doctor or dermatologist. Often, dandruff can be diagnosed simply by looking at your hair and scalp.
