Rosacea is a skin condition which usually presents with redness of the skin and acne-type breakouts, usually along the cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin. Some patients experience only minor redness during a rosacea flare-up, but others may have to deal with pain, swelling and lasting skin damage.

It is also possible to have eye symptoms related to the ocular manifestation of rosacea which may present with redness, irritation or a foreign body sensation in the eyes.

People often have rosacea flare-ups after eating certain foods or spending time in certain weather conditions. Let’s take a look at some of the most common rosacea triggers– and how you can improve your quality of life by avoiding them.

Which foods and drinks might be rosacea triggers?

Some of the most common rosacea triggers are food and beverage-related. The items below often cause flare-ups in patients:

  • Spicy foods
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Hot beverages

What are some lifestyle causes of a rosacea flare-up?

Other common rosacea triggers are environmental or lifestyle-related. When possible, try to minimize your exposure to the triggers listed below:

  • Harsh weather conditions –including heat, high humidity, cold and wind
  • Direct sunlight
  • Heavy use of cosmetics and hairsprays – especially those containing alcohol
  • Stress

Rosacea can be an embarrassing and painful condition if left uncontrolled, but you can take action to decrease your symptoms by avoiding common rosacea triggers.

Fortunately, rosacea is also treatable. A doctor may prescribe topical antimicrobial creams, oral antibiotics, medicated washes or other therapies to help you manage your symptoms.
