Skin Cancer Awareness and Tips for All Skin Types

With Skin Cancer Awareness Month and Melanoma Monday a little over a month away, we are reminded of the importance of checking your skin for suspicious spots. It is a common misconception that skin cancer only effects people with fair skin tones. In fact, skin cancer rates in patients with darker skin have continued to rise over the last 5 years. In fact, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, the survival rate for African Americans diagnosed with skin cancer is 77% as compared to 91% in caucasian patients. This is largely due to early detection and prevention. No matter what your skin tone is, it is important to always protect your skin from the sun. Here are 3 tips to keeping your skin healthy this summer:

 1. Apply about 1 ounce of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before sun exposure.

2. Always use broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen for the best protection.

3. Visit your physician for an annual skin cancer spot check.

The summer will be here before you know it! If you have a suspicious mole of one that has changed, call us for an immediate care appointment. We will see you within 2 business days (additional clinical issues will require a second visit). Healthy skin is our pledge to you!
