Things to know about laser skin resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing is a popular procedure in the cosmetic dermatology world. The procedure consists of using a laser device to smooth and even the surface of the skin. Whether it’s the first time getting a laser treatment or a repeat patient, here are some essential things to know about laser skin resurfacing.

  • Treatment may be non-invasive, but there is a chance of downtime. Laser skin treatments are considered non-surgical. However, you may have redness, swelling, and some downtime. Patients have described laser treatments to rubber bands snapping against the skin. While your provider may be able to offer topical numbing for the procedure, it is up to the individual’s pain tolerance.
  • Certain medications or conditions can affect the outcome of laser treatments. Discuss your medical history – including medications and skin care products you are currently using with the provider before starting laser treatments. Certain chronic conditions can impact the safety and results of laser treatments.
  • Different lasers treat different skin conditions. There is no such thing as ‘one laser treats all’ when it comes to laser skin resurfacing. Some different lasers are:
    • CO2 Lasers are ablative lasers that treat wrinkles, scars, and deeper skin flaws.
    • Erbium Lasers promote collagen growth, which makes them popular options for treating age spots, fine lines, laxity, and wrinkles. These lasers can be ablative or non-ablative.
    • Pulsed-Dye Lasers heat the skin and absorb pigments to reduce redness, hyperpigmentation, and broken blood vessels. These lasers are typically non-ablative lasers.
    • Fractional Lasers treat smaller areas of the skin at a time. These types of lasers break up the laser energy into thousands of tiny beams. This break-up of energy helps to reduce downtime.
  • Laser treatments deliver better results when performed in multiple treatments. Even though results can be seen after just one treatment, optimal laser treatment results are achieved when performed in series.
  • Who performs your treatment matters. Your provider should be highly trained in lasers to yield great results. Lasers can be harmful if your skin care provider is not skilled.

The providers at Anne Arundel Dermatology and Affiliate offices are trained extensively in lasers. To schedule a consultation for your laser treatment, visit us online or call us at 443-351-3376.
