BOTOX® and Dysport®: Know the Difference

If you’ve been curious about wrinkle-relaxing injectable treatments, you’ve probably seen both Botox® and Dysport® come up. They’re often mentioned in the same breath, and for good reason. Both are FDA-approved wrinkle treatments that work by temporarily relaxing the muscles responsible for fine lines and wrinkles. But they’re not identical, and understanding the differences can help you have a more informed conversation with your provider.

What Are BOTOX® and Dysport®?

Both Botox and Dysport are injectable wrinkle treatments derived from botulinum toxin type A. When injected in small, controlled amounts, they temporarily block the nerve signals that cause muscles to contract, which smooths the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, the kind formed by repeated facial expressions like squinting, smiling, or furrowing your brow.

Botox received FDA approval for cosmetic use in 2002 and remains the most widely recognized wrinkle relaxer on the market. Dysport has been used in Europe for decades and is FDA-approved in the U.S. for treating moderate to severe frown lines. Both are safe, well-studied, and widely used in aesthetic dermatology.

Key Differences Between BOTOX® and Dysport®

At their core, the two products share the same active ingredient. The differences come down to formulation, how they behave in the skin, and which treatment areas they’re best suited for.

Formulations

The most meaningful difference between Botox and Dysport is how each formula is structured. Dysport has a lighter molecular formulation, which allows it to diffuse more readily after injection, making it a strong option for larger surface areas like the forehead, where broader coverage is the goal. Botox has a more concentrated formulation that stays closer to the injection site, which gives providers greater precision in smaller or more delicate areas like crow’s feet or around the lips.

Effectiveness

Both products deliver comparable results for reducing moderate to severe wrinkles, and both are effective for facial rejuvenation injections when matched to the right patient and treatment area. Dysport tends to show initial results a bit faster, often within two to three days, with full effect around 10 days. Botox for forehead lines and other areas typically shows first results in three to five days, with full effect around 14 days.

Duration is similar for both: most patients enjoy results for three to four months, though individual metabolism plays a role.

Pricing

Pricing can look different on paper but tends to be comparable in practice. Dysport is typically priced lower per unit, but because it requires roughly 2.5 to 3 times as many units as Botox to achieve the same effect, the overall treatment cost is usually similar.

Which One is Right for You?

There’s no universal answer, and that’s exactly why a consultation with an experienced provider matters. The best choice depends on your treatment goals, facial anatomy, and how you’ve responded to injectable treatments in the past. A few factors your provider will consider:

  • Which areas you want to treat and how much coverage is needed
  • Whether you’ve had Botox or Dysport before and how your body responded
  • Your timeline: If you have an event coming up, faster onset may be a factor
  • Personal preference based on previous results

Both products can deliver natural-looking results when placed by a skilled injector. The goal is always the same: subtle improvement that still looks like you.
