A Journey from Surgery to Scar Removal

A JOURNEY FROM SURGERY TO SCAR REMOVAL

Skin cancer is the world’s most common form of cancer. Statistically, 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. Receiving a skin cancer diagnosis can be upsetting and scary, but fortunately, when detected early, the 5-year survival rate for melanoma is 99 percent.

Mohs surgery is considered the most effective technique for treating the two most common types of skin cancer. The procedure involves progressively removing thin layers of cancer-containing skin and examining each layer under a microscope until only cancer-free tissue remains. The surgeon repairs the wound and sends the patient home with instructions for wound care, scar care, and any follow-up appointments to achieve the best outcome.

Regardless of how diligent they are with following their post-procedure instructions, some patients are prone to scarring from their Mohs surgery. Often times over-the-counter scar creams are not effective in reducing the scars, especially if there’s scar tissue. Healthy, cancer-free skin is the top priority, but there are cosmetic options to remove the visible reminders of a prior cancer diagnosis.

Below is one patient’s story who had successful outcomes with the skin cancer diagnosis, surgery, and scar removal. She was treated at every stage by one of our dermatology experts.

Due to visible scarring following her Mohs surgery, this patient sought treatment from Sarah Lowe, RN, one of our cosmetic dermatology nurses. Sarah used her expertise to develop an individualized treatment plan to minimize the appearance of scarring and maintain her healthy skin. The details of this patient’s skin journey are as follows:

BEFORE This patient is a skin cancer survivor diagnosed and treated at Anne Arundel Dermatology. Following her Mohs surgery, she began her cosmetic treatment journey with Sarah Lowe, RN.
TREATMENT Sarah Lowe, RN, performed six full-face BBLs™ and a few spot BBLs™ on her surgical scar for redness and capillaries. She also had a microneedling spot treatment with PRP.
FUTURE PLANS The patient would further benefit from a full-face HALO® treatment with PRP for an even deeper overall resurfacing and collagen stimulation.
