6 Tips on Skin Maintenance During Holiday Travel

The holidays are an opportunity to travel, see loved ones, and explore new places. However, the disruption to your routine could throw you off your regular skin maintenance schedule. The following tips can help you keep your skin fresh and glowing while traveling for the holidays.

Invest in Quality Skincare

Quality medical-grade skincare products last longer and offer more benefits than over-the-counter brands. A little goes a long way, making them easy to pack. Be sure to bring your regular products from your dermatologist’s office instead of opting for products from the travel section at your retail store. If you are not sure what products are best for your skin, consider scheduling an appointment or product consultation.

Keep It Simple

When packing your toiletry bag, you may be tempted to leave all of your products at home. While you do not have to bring an extensive skincare routine, think about packing at least the essentials on holiday. Make sure to bring a cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. A simplified skincare routine can minimize your travel stress without compromising your skin.

Switch to Travel-Sized

If you can’t find travel-sized versions of your essentials, try purchasing smaller bottles and placing your product inside. It’s better to keep your products consistent rather than buying new products, simply because they come in smaller sizes. An old contact lens case can be a great storage container for your eye creams. You can also try pre-soaking cotton pads with makeup remover or toner. Consider carrying them in a plastic or reusable zip bag for portability and mess-proof travel.

Take Care During Your Plane Ride

Airplanes are built with low humidity in the cabins. A long plane ride can dehydrate your skin, especially this year, as travelers are required to wear face masks. However, you can minimize skin dryness by applying your favorite nighttime moisturizer before boarding your plane. In addition, think about bringing along a small bottle of your favorite facial mist to spray on your face during the flight. Consider doing the same when traveling on long car rides, especially when the heater is on.

Watch for Sun Intensity

Whether you travel to warmer climates or are heading to snowy weather, it is still essential to wear sunscreen. Make sure you have sunscreen for your face with an SPF of at least 30. Medical-grade sunscreen products offer better protection than those you can buy over the counter.

If you’re someone who likes to wear makeup on vacation, look for products that contain at least some SPF, especially if you are visiting a sunny environment. Consider purchasing a tinted moisturizer or sunscreen that contains SPF.

Lastly, avoid using an indoor tanning device before going on your trip. That can increase your risk of suffering damage from UV rays. Consider a self-tanning lotion or embracing your natural skin.

Stay in the Shade

Look for ways to get out of the sun when you get the chance. Be especially mindful of the sun when it peaks between 10 am and 4 pm. Wear UV sunglasses to protect the delicate skin around your eyes from potential damage. Think about wearing a broad-brimmed hat to protect your neck, face, and ears. Protect the rest of your body by wearing protective clothing over exposed skin.
