BOTOX® and Dysport®: Know the Difference

For many, the aging process leads to fine lines and wrinkles. Neurotoxins, or injections used to block muscle contractions, reduce the signs of aging and minimize wrinkles. BOTOX® and Dysport® are two types of neurotoxins, typically referred to as neuromodulators, most commonly used today. As we prepare for April Free BOTOX® month, we are answering one of the most asked questions about neuromodulators: What is the difference between BOTOX® and Dysport®? What are they, and why do they matter to your skin and the aging process?

What is Botox®? What is Dysport®?

BOTOX® stems from botulinum toxin, a bacteria found in nature that produces neurotoxins. In its original form, it can have deadly effects if not used properly, as those that first discovered it in the 1800s learned. Today it is formulated to work very well to block the chemical signals sent between the muscles and the nerves. The FDA first approved BOTOX® in 1989. In 2002, BOTOX® Cosmetic was approved in the United States for frown line improvement, though today, it is used for a wide range of conditions

Dysport is a second version, a derivative of the same neurotoxin used in BOTOX®. In the 1980s, it was approved to treat some types of muscle spasm disorders. It has the same molecular structure at its core but is different in the proteins that surround and protect that core.

What Is the Difference?

Both Dysport® and BOTOX® are beneficial and should be considered in treating a range of conditions. There are a few differences between the two.

What they do

Both work to effectively reduce moderate to severe wrinkles. They both work on fine lines, too.

Formulations

A big difference between the two is the formulation.

Dysport® is a diluted form and spreads quickly and easily compared to BOTOX®. As a result of this, Dysport® works better for larger surface areas. That includes areas like the forehead. BOTOX® is far more potent, making it ideal for smaller areas and challenging areas to treat, such as crow’s feet. The biggest difference between the two is how much is used and where they are used.

Pricing

There is not much difference in the cost Dysport® and BOTOX®, though it can seem that way at first glance. Typically, Dysport® is less per unit, but it’s not necessarily less expensive. Rather, it is priced lower per unit because most applications need 2.5 times as much Dysport® as BOTOX® to get the same dosage.

Effectiveness

Both products have similar overall effectiveness and success rates when it comes to managing wrinkles. Both neuromodulators can last anywhere from 3 to 6 months, depending on where they were injected and the individual’s metabolism.

Procedure

Most often, the procedure for either product takes only a few minutes to complete. The skill of the cosmetic dermatology injector and the treatment area play a role in this. The effects of BOTOX® are first visible around 7 days after injection, with full results around 14 days. The effects of Dysport® are first visible around 5 days after injection, with full results around 10 days.

Who uses it

There are limitations on who can use either product, such as those who are pregnant, have a history of botulinum toxin sensitivity, have a milk allergy, or those over the age of 65. Your doctor may talk with you about medications you are taking and determine which type is best for your overall needs. For many people, neuromodulators are a fast and easy way to see significant improvement in the signs of aging.

Which One Should You Choose?

It is best to work closely with a skilled, medically-licensed dermatology injector to determine which of these neuromodulators is the best decision for your needs. Keep in mind that every patient has individual results – your body metabolizes and reacts to products in its own way. That is why it is so important to have an outstanding team of dermatology professionals available to help you.

If you’re finally ready to get rid of those fine lines, call to schedule a complimentary consultation to determine which neuromodulator is best for you, and be sure to take advantage of our April Free BOTOX® Promotion: Buy 25 units, receive 5 free. Learn more today.
