Healthy Skin Habits

This March, we are highlighting ways that you can take your skin into your own hands. The skin is the largest organ on our bodies but probably one of the most neglected. Even if you haven’t prioritized your skin, there are ways you can bring your skin back to life starting today. Learn five ways to have healthy skin below:

1)     Good Nutrition

Did you know that March is National Nutrition Month? It is so important to have a well-balanced, nutritious diet that there is an entire month dedicated to this cause! The food we put in our bodies can directly impact our skin – leading to healthy, glowing skin or dry, irritated skin. According to the Mayo Clinic, a balanced diet with a variety of fruits, vegetables, low-fat or fat-free dairy products, and antioxidant-rich foods are good for your skin and your overall health.

2)     Drink Water

The skin is made up of over 60% water, so being hydrated is essential to skin health. Experts say adults should drink eight glasses of water per day. Another easy way to calculate daily water requirements is to take your weight, divide it by two, and aim for that number of ounces per day. While research is not conclusive on all of the benefits of drinking water for the skin, it certainly cannot hurt – as water helps to hydrate the body and rid it of toxins. Results will not happen overnight, but after increasing water intake for a few weeks, you may be able to see a healthy glow to your skin.

3)     Manage Stress

Have you ever had a breakout of acne or eczema when you were under a lot of stress? Once you noticed the breakout, did you become even more stressed because of it? When our bodies sense emotional or physical stress, it releases more cortisol or the “stress hormone,” which triggers inflammation. This vicious stress-breakout cycle can continue without taking proper steps to manage your stress. Once you identify the source(s) of your stress, try your best to minimize it. If that is not possible, consider practicing self-care such as meditation, exercise, or scheduling breaks to reduce the effects of stress in your life and on your skin.

4)     Skin Care Routine

One of the best ways to have healthy skin is to take care of it. Having a good skincare routine seems simple, but the skin is something we often take for granted when it comes to our bodies. Some general tips for the skin include washing your face twice a day with a gentle cleanser, moisturizing your face and body, and wearing sunscreen (more on this below). Do you have a specific area of concern or need help creating a good skincare routine? Consider scheduling an appointment with one of our licensed providers to identify the best-individualized skincare routine for your skin.

5)     Sun Protection

When it comes to sun protection, it’s simple: everyone needs to wear sunscreen every day. The sun doesn’t discriminate. Its harmful UV rays can damage the skin and even lead to skin cancer in people of all ages and races. People typically remember to wear sunscreen in the summer just before outdoor activities, but sunscreen should be a part of your daily skincare routine all year. When you do plan to be in direct sunlight, add extra protection such as hats, sunglasses with UV protection lenses, and even clothing that offers sun protection. Do you wear sunscreen every day? Consider purchasing one of our favorite SPF products, which are currently on sale in our online store for our March Madness specials. Use code ‘MM21’ for 20% off your SPF purchase.

As you can see, some of the best ways you can care for your skin can be done today, right from the comfort of your own home. Allow these healthy skin tips to become daily habits. Consistency is important for taking care of your skin. What is one thing you can do today that your skin will thank you for?
